Fences for Fido™

Smyth County Humane Society assists residents with the cost and installation of various dog containment fences and dog trollies to improve quality of life for dogs and to foster companionship between pet and owner. Residents of Smyth County may apply directly or anonymously nominate someone else for the program. Download a PDF of the Fences for Fido™ application here. Spay/Neuter Assistance

Smyth County Humane Society offers monetary assistance to income-qualified Smyth County residents whose pets need to be spayed or neutered. SCHS coordinates van transportation twice a month to Margaret B. Mitchell Clinic Spay/Neuter Clinic in Bristol. Animals are picked up at Tractor Supply on North Main Street in Marion at 6:30 a.m. twice monthly and are returned the following day at noon for to be picked up by their owners. Joint Rescue Efforts

Joint rescue efforts have allowed SCHS to pull, foster, and place animals from the Smyth County Animal Shelter  and resulted in a decrease of 41% in the shelter euthanasia rate in the past year. These efforts seeks to maximize adoption opportunities. Working with City Dogs Rescue of Washington, D.C., has saved the lives of thousands of dogs since 2013.


Educational Outreach

Speakers are available to groups of children or adults for educational programs about the humane treatment of animals and responsible pet ownership. Call (276) 780-7702 or submit a contact form for more information or to arrange a program.


Pet Food Collection and Distribution

SCHS is looking for school groups, scout troops, church groups, companies, or anyone interested to sponsor a pet food drive. There is a great need for dog and cat food in our community! To help, call (276) 780-7702 or email



SCHS encourages adoption of animals from the Smyth County Animal Shelter and from local animal rescues. Photos and descriptions of shelter animals available for adoption are published weekly in the Smyth County News & Messenger and can be accessed at Adopt-a-Pet. The SCHS Facebook page is updated regularly with new photos and stories of animals in need
